TidBits: x86 Mac Talk and CIO Pay News
X86 Macintosh Discussion
According to inside sources reported in an eWeek article, Apple's secret Marklar project is a full working implementation of Jaguar on Intel's x86 architecture. The article states that Jobs has had a Plan B x86 implementation as a "low-cost way of keeping the company's options open." The Marklar team is reported to be just 10 strong. For those familiar with Apple's secret Star Trek project (which ported Apple's classic Mac OS to x86 back in the early 90's) that team started out initially very small as well.
Mac OS X is built on industry standards and a UNIX-foundation from NeXT which was already running on Intel architectures prior to Apple's purchase of the company in 1997.
Is X86 a Good Idea? What Do You Think?
This topic has some interesting feedback in the ExtremeTech online forums. Most of it seems to come from Windows users very interested in a future on x86 that "isn't controlled by Microsoft". In some places posters plea with Apple to release Mac OS X for x86. In others, posters generally feel that letting this cat out of the bag is simply a way of getting Bill Gates to not mess with dropping Mac support for Office and its other apps. One poster says:
It's existence in "Apple Skunkworks" is nothing more than something to give Bill Gates pause to think about before messing with Apple. Expect to see OSX on x86 the day after Gates announces it will no longer support Office on Apple Computers.
This poster makes a very good point. Not only is it a strategic hedge given the PowerPC platform's problems but it places an extreme threat on Microsoft if Apple could easily sell a competing operating system which could run side-by-side with Windows. In that case, Gates should naturally be very nervous.
CIO: Chief Information Officer - Making the Top-Paid List
An interesting article on Baselinemag.com talks about top paid CIOs. At the end of the article is the following advice for getting top pay:
1. Avoid some industries: Utility, drug, financial, oil are some of the industries where CIOs get paid less than other executives.
2. Build Alliances: Work strategically among other senior managers to become a full partner in setting a company's direction.
3. Hang Tough. Length of time on the job increases compensation and stature.
4. Lose the inferiority complex: Confidently change the way the CEO views technology.
5. Talk the other fellow's language: Use business terms to describe your initiatives and accomplishments, not technology jargon.
6. Focus on what the CEO cares about. Pick out key business goals that the CEO plans and focus on technology that supports that.
For IT directors and CTO/CIOs in AEC firms, these rules should also apply to help you accomplish personal career goals. If you have any thoughts and would like to share them on Architosh regarding compensation and value with IT in AEC, please write to us.
